Prakriti is your unique biological and psychological constitution — determined at the moment of conception and unchanging throughout your life. It is the lens through which you experience the world, your inherent strengths and vulnerabilities, and the key to your most vibrant health. The word itself means "original creation" — your fundamental nature, before any of life's imbalances accumulated.
प्रकृतिः स्वभावो नित्यं देहिनः।
prakṛtiḥ svabhāvo nityaṁ dehinaḥ |
— Charaka Samhita, Vi. 8/96 — Prakriti is the permanent nature of the embodied being — it is with the individual always, from birth to death.
The Three Doshas
Prakriti is expressed through three fundamental bio-energies:
- Vata (air and ether) — governs all movement: nerve impulses, circulation, breathing, elimination. Vata types are creative, enthusiastic, quick-thinking. In imbalance: anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, scattered thinking.
- Pitta (fire and water) — governs transformation: metabolism, digestion, intelligence. Pitta types are courageous, focused, decisive. In imbalance: inflammation, acidity, anger, perfectionism.
- Kapha (earth and water) — governs structure: stability, immunity, lubrication. Kapha types are compassionate, patient, enduring. In imbalance: weight gain, lethargy, congestion, depression.
How Prakriti is Assessed
A trained Ayurveda practitioner assesses Prakriti through Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis) — where the quality of the radial pulse reveals the dosha proportions with remarkable precision. This is complemented by assessment of physical characteristics, mental tendencies, digestive capacity, sleep patterns, emotional responses, and voice quality.
No two Prakritis are identical — which is precisely why Ayurveda offers truly personalised medicine. A prescription that heals a Pitta type may aggravate a Vata type.
"Prakriti is not just your body type — it is the original song of your existence. Every therapeutic intervention in Ayurveda is ultimately an attempt to bring you back into harmony with that original song." — Harsh Ranjan, Samarpan
