शब्दब्रह्म परं ब्रह्म।
śabdabrahma paraṁ brahma |
— Mahanirvana Tantra — Sound-Brahma is the supreme Brahma — the universe itself arose from primordial vibration.
Sound and the Nervous System
Studies at Harvard Medical School and NIMHANS Bangalore have shown that sustained chanting activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol, and increases grey matter volume in the left prefrontal cortex. The repetitive phonemes of Sanskrit mantras synchronise brainwave activity, entraining the mind into healing frequencies through a process called neural entrainment.
Nada Brahma — Sound Is Brahma
The Vedic principle that the universe emerged from primordial sound (Anahata Nada) is not mere metaphor. Patanjali codified AUM as representing the four states of consciousness — and neuroscience finds that chanting AUM activates the vagus nerve, thalamus, and limbic system simultaneously.
The three components of AUM: A (waking/Jagrat), U (dreaming/Svapna), M (deep sleep/Sushupti), and the silence following — Turiya, pure consciousness. In chanting AUM with awareness, one systematically passes through all states of consciousness in a single breath.
"When mantra is practiced with full awareness of its meaning, it becomes a vibrational technology for consciousness itself — not merely a relaxation technique, but a systematic method for neurological and spiritual transformation." — Harsh Ranjan
