— Charaka Samhita, Su. 1/57 — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha always reside in the body. When disturbed, they produce disease. When in their natural state, they do not cause suffering.
Vata — The Force of Movement
Governed by air and ether, Vata controls all movement — nerve impulses, circulation, breathing, and elimination. The Vata-dominant person thinks quickly, moves quickly, changes direction quickly. In balance: creative, enthusiastic, quick-thinking, communicative. Imbalanced: anxiety, insomnia, constipation, dry skin, scattered thinking, joint pain, and a persistent sense of instability.
Pitta — The Force of Transformation
Governed by fire and water, Pitta controls digestion, metabolism, and intelligence. The Pitta-dominant person has sharp discernment, strong digestion, and natural leadership. In balance: courageous, focused, warm, and decisively intelligent. Imbalanced: inflammation, acidity, skin rashes, anger, perfectionism, and burnout — the person who achieves remarkable things but destroys themselves in the process.
Kapha — The Force of Cohesion
Governed by earth and water, Kapha provides structure, stability, and lubrication. The Kapha-dominant person has great endurance, deep loyalty, and natural calm. In balance: compassionate, patient, stable, with enduring physical and emotional strength. Imbalanced: weight gain, congestion, depression, lethargy, and attachment.
